Biju Punnachalil Joins Bandhan Bank as Chief Risk Officer to Enhance Risk Management, ETCISO

Bandhan Bank appoints Biju Punnachalil as Chief Risk Officer in a move to strengthen its enterprise risk management.

“I joined Bandhan Bank on July 14 as the Chief Risk Officer at a time when the bank is undergoing a significant transformation. Having been part of the transformation journey at South Indian Bank, I look forward to contributing meaningfully to Bandhan Bank’s evolution by bringing in my experience in enterprise risk and strategic change management,” Punnachalil told ETCISO.

Punnachalil brings over three decades of experience in banking and financial services, with extensive expertise across credit risk, operational risk, market risk, and regulatory compliance.

He began his journey with South Indian Bank in 1996, handling branch operations and frontline banking. His early years cemented his expertise in customer servicing and operational excellence. In 2000, he transitioned to the treasury function, where he spent more than a decade managing market risk, particularly focusing on interest rate risk and liquidity risk.

His active participation in asset liability management (ALM) and close engagement with regulatory bodies allowed him to develop frameworks that aligned with evolving compliance standards while optimising the bank’s balance sheet and capital strategies.

Punnachalil began his banking career with Federal Bank in 1993, working in branch banking and operations.

He holds a Master of Science (Physics) and a Bachelor of Science (Physics) from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala.
