Gartner predicts that by 2028, half of organizations will adopt a zero-trust posture for data governance as unverified AI-generated data becomes more widespread. The shift reflects the growing difficulty of distinguishing AI-generated data from human-created data, increasing the need for stronger authentication and verification measures to protect business outcomes.
As organizations expand GenAI use, the volume of AI-generated content is expected to rise sharply. Gartner’s 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey found that 84% of respondents expect their organizations to increase GenAI funding in 2026. With more AI-generated material entering common training sources, future language models may increasingly learn from earlier model outputs, raising the risk of model collapse, where model responses become less reliable and less grounded in reality.
Gartner also notes that requirements to verify or label AI-generated data may intensify in some regions, though approaches are likely to vary across geographies. In this environment, organizations may need stronger capabilities to identify, tag, and manage AI-generated data, supported by effective metadata management and information governance skills.
To manage risks associated with unverified AI-generated data, Gartner recommends steps such as assigning clear AI governance ownership, forming cross-functional teams involving cybersecurity and data stakeholders to assess risks, updating existing governance policies to address new AI-related issues, and adopting active metadata practices that can flag stale or unverified data and trigger recertification.
