Proofpoint Strengthens Operations in India with AI Security Focus, ETCISO
Proofpoint announced an expansion of its operations in India as organisations increase their adoption of AI and face evolving privacy, data protection and security requirements, including those arising from the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA).
According to Proofpoint’s 2026 AI and Human Risk Landscape report, 87% of organisations globally have deployed AI, while 52% of those organisations are not fully confident they could detect a compromised AI system.
Proofpoint said its business in India has tripled over the past 12 months, while new customer acquisition has grown at a double-digit rate. The number of seats protected has increased by more than 600% over the past 18 months. Recent customer wins include organisations in the BFSI, BPO, defence and public sectors.
The company said demand has also increased for capabilities such as Active Exploits Protection, which helps security teams identify vulnerabilities being actively exploited, prioritise remediation based on real-world attacker activity and reduce exposure.
Data protection and DPDPA
According to Proofpoint’s latest Voice of the CISO report, 99% of Indian CISOs surveyed reported material loss of sensitive data, compared with 66% globally.
The company said AI adoption is increasing the ways employees and AI agents create and share sensitive data, creating additional challenges around where data resides, how it is used and how it is protected.
Proofpoint’s data security offering combines Data Security Posture Management (DSPM), Enterprise and Adaptive Email Data Loss Prevention (DLP), and Insider Threat Management (ITM). These capabilities are designed to help organisations discover and classify sensitive data, prevent data loss across channels used by employees and AI systems, and detect risky behaviour by users.
For government and public sector organisations with data localisation and on-premises requirements, the company said its insider threat capabilities can operate while keeping sensitive data within required environments.
“India is at the intersection of three major shifts: rapid AI adoption, an increasingly sophisticated threat landscape and a new era of data protection and compliance,” said Sumit Dhawan, CEO of Proofpoint. “As organisations embrace AI, protecting people and sensitive data—and securing how employees and AI agents work together—becomes even more critical.”
Expansion of India R&D operations
Proofpoint is establishing an AI Security Engineering Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad, with plans to hire more than 200 engineers over the next 12 to 24 months. The centre will work on AI security technologies, including capabilities related to AI governance, runtime protection, and security for AI applications, copilots and autonomous agents.
The company is also expanding its presence with a new Delhi office and additional investment in sales, customer success, technical support and partner operations.
Proofpoint said it has more than 550 extended team members at its Pune Centre of Excellence supporting engineering, product development, customer support and technical services. It also operates a local data centre that has supported Indian customers since the third quarter of 2025 for compliance and data sovereignty requirements.
The company has operations hubs in Delhi and Bengaluru supporting its go-to-market activities.
