Madurai: Madurai rural district cyber crime police have asked the public to be vigilant against scammers sending apk files for traffic challans and banking KYC updates, or even updates for govt schemes and EB bill payment.

Police said that recently, there have been cases of people losing money afters scammers hacked their accounts, especially through apk files downloaded from fake mobile apps shared through platforms like WhatsApp.

When these files are installed, the cyber criminals use them to hack the victim’s WhatsApp account and subsequently their mobile phone, gaining access to SMS messages and other data, even hacking into their internet banking account. Police said hackers can threaten people using the data and withdraw or transfer money from their bank accounts.

While the best way to prevent such frauds is to not open or click such links, in case someone installs an apk file accidentally, police advise immediately putting their mobile phone on airplane mode to cut off connectivity. Thereafter, the file should be deleted, and the the phone subjected to factory data reset.

In case of any financial loss due to online fraud, public can immediately call the cyber crime toll-free helpline number 1930 for help. Complaints can also be filed with cyber crime police through the website www.cybercrime.gov.in.
